The Sheriff's Mounted Unit is a volunteer group
comprised of people from various walks of life. The career professions
of the members include salesmen, production workers, business owners,
full time police/corrections officers, emergency medical technicians and
many others.
The Sheriff's Unit was organized by the Muskegon
County Sheriff to assist in crowd control, search and rescue, public
relations and to act as a reserve unit as directed by the Sheriff.
The members are deputized as special deputies by the
Sheriff of Muskegon County. Each member has completed a law enforcement
training class conducted by the Kent County Traffic Squad. Additional
training from the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department includes the use
of firearms, and pepper spray. Deputies have also received training in
first aid and CPR. Each member, along with their horse must participate
in an annual training session which includes exposure to situations that
may be encountered in the Unit's line of duty. Crowd control tactics and
formations are also trained and drilled.
Each member is responsible to purchase and maintain
their own horse, saddle, truck, trailer, uniform and all other equipment
required by the Mounted Unit.
